My brother and I were walking through the woods one Halloween
day when we saw what appeared to be a short-cut. “Let’s go
that way,” my brother said.
I shifted direction and said OK. We walked down the twisty path. It was getting dark.
“can I have your flashlight?” He handed me his flashlight. I shined it down the path.
We were coming up to an opening in the path. I set my trick or treat bag down and
surveyed the break in trees. “Can we go now? this place is spooky!” I turned around
to look at him. “It’s not that—“ but I was cut off by a bloodcurdling scream
somewhere nearby. We bolted in no general direction but the screams
weren’t getting any quieter. In fact, they were getting louder. But we were too
frightened to change direction.
It must have been ten minutes before we stopped running. It wasn’t because we were
out of breath, (and we WERE!) or that the screaming stopped, but that we found the
source. A towering mansion, majestically looming over the trees. It was old, maybe
from the 1800’s. You could tell it was old from the style. It seemed
Victorian with a bit of western and regency mixed in. my brother looked at me he
didn’t have to ask for me to know what we was wondering. I nodded, slowly at first,
then again, this time firmly. We crept to the house, and I’m sure the same things
were going on inside our heads. The Lowland Manor. The Lowland Manor
was occupied about a century ago by a rich family. They never went into town,
just had things delivered to them. Then one day, a servant came back from town,
just to find them all dead. Since then, nobody has gone anywhere remotely close
to these woods. The stairs were very creaky as we stepped up. I pushed on the
creaky door. It was dark inside, but the flashlight illuminated it slightly. There
were cobwebs everywhere, for one thing, but otherwise, it seemed like a
perfectly normal house. So we checked each room, all the way to the attic. I
hesitated at the door; there were unclear sounds coming from behind it. I counted
down from ten in my head, then pushed the door open. “Hey guys, come on in!
We’re watching harry potter!” It was our friends all along!
