Question & Answers About The Blog!
How do I become an author on the blog? I'll send you an email invite. Be sure to be on a computer where you are logged in to your Google account. I'll try to do it in class. Follow directions carefully and ask for help. Please make sure you put your first and last initial on your google profile so we don't have no-name posts. Just to be safe, include your name at the bottom.
How often do I post? You are required to post once a month and leave 3 comments as feedback on other's work. I'll be adding you all as authors on the site so you can freely post. The deadline is the last day of the month.
How do I post? Make sure you are logged into your school gmail account. Click the "Post" button on the top right screen. Type your post and hit "publish" or "update". It should now show on the blog.
What do I write? Each month I will post exactly what the requirements are. Please follow directions so you can receive full points on the assignment. See the link on the right for what good feedback looks like. I'll have you write a large variety of different types of writing.
How often should I get on the blog? I'd get on at least once a week. You do post once a month, but remember to read everyone else's post as well as mine. It's an interactive blog, the more feedback the better.
Does this count on my grade? Why, yes it does! It's part of your academic grade. Do not be late! If you are, you'll lose points. After 2 weeks, I will no longer accept late work and it will impact your grade.
Does anyone else read this besides our class? It is a public blog but it's not publicly shared. Feel free to invite your parents and friends to read. Please only use your first name and last initial (example: Rachel R.) when you post.
How do I behave on the blog? We are all developing writers. You should always be kind, positive and thoughtful. Do your very best and always encourage each other. We are a community, a family of writers and there is no room for making fun or being rude to others.
First Blog Post Assignment Due on August 31st
Your assignment has 2 parts, follow directions carefully.
Part One: Go to last year's Honors Writing Blog: https://robinshonors2017.blogspot.com/ Last year's Honors students left you all sorts of good (and funny) advice to help you be successful in my honors class. There over 30 posts giving you 10 tips from each student on how to survive this year. Please read a few posts--as many as you want--and come up with 3 of the BEST pieces of advice that you will follow.
Part Two: Now, go back to our blog. Once you've accepted my invitation to be an author on the blog you should see a button on the upper right of the screen that says "new post". Select that and begin to write. When finished writing, hit "update"and it should post.
Please write 2 paragraphs for your first blog post:
Paragraph #1: Tell me about the top 3 best pieces of advice that you will follow this year. Why did you select them? How will they help you become a better student?
Paragraph #2: Now, introduce yourself to the class as a writer. Tell us what you like to write, how you started writing, what you hope to accomplish in this class, etc. Be creative!
Mrs. Robins's Post
(here's an example for you)
I always LOVE reading the last blog post of the year. I laughed, I cried, I enthusiastically shook my head in agreement and laughed some more. It's always fun to see what students learn and what stands out to them throughout a year in Honors Language Arts. I found 3 big ideas that students had mentioned that I really thought were great. First, don't procrastinate! No joke, due dates are firm. I will only accept late work up to two weeks, but with a deduction. It will be good practice for the real world living and make your life WAY easier if you do things on time. Get a head start and don't wait until the last minute. Second, be social! In my class you'll work in different groups throughout the year and it would be great if you expand your friend group and really get to know each other. Our Honors class can help you get to know more kids--kids you'll be in school with for years. So, don't just stick to who you know, put yourself out there and make new friends! Last, but not least, pay attention! Class will move along quickly. If you are reading or chatting while I'm talking, odds are I'll call you out and you won't know what is happening. Never be afraid to ask questions. I am kind and will go over things again, but I will bothered if you are intentionally zoning out! No worries, it's going to be a great year and these tips will help you!
My life as a writer...it all started when I was pretty young. I had a desire to write my thoughts down. I started writing in a journal, adapting books to plays ("Freckle Juice" in 2nd grade was my first foray), and writing poetry. I started to enter contests in middle school and had enough wins to really get the fire in my belly. Writing was fun, I loved it and it all made sense in my head. As I became older, I was able to do well in college with my writing ability and it helped me land some pretty good jobs before I became a teacher. I began writing in earnest when I returned to college after having my kids and found that good writing led me to have some publishing and travel opportunities. I have a couple of novels in the works (but struggle to make time to finish), blog on a regular basis and use my writing almost every day! I really love teaching students to write and giving them tools to be able to express themselves through the written word. I consider everyone a writer and feel it's my calling to help every student refine their skills.
